If you are experiencing unusual symptoms, you probably need medical help; in the medical industry, various medications are available to treat Anxiety and panic attacks.

Like the drug, Klonopin treats seizures, Anxiety, and panic attacks. It will have a calming effect on your brain and erase your symptoms. But can you take Klonopin with alcohol? Let us see this in detail.

What Is Klonopin (Clonazepam)?

Klonopin belongs to a class of drugs that are called Benzodiazepines. Clonazepam is the generic name for Klonopin. It is an FDA-approved drug for treating seizure disorders, panic attacks, and Anxiety. It is available only after the prescription and relieves your panic and seizure attacks.

How Does Klonopin Work?

It is a controlled substance due to drug addiction or Abuse. It belongs to the class of Benzodiazepines. It works by lifting certain activities of the neurotransmitters in the brain. It aids in reducing the excitability of neurons in your brain. Thus, it will produce a very mild effect on the brain. It will help relieve your panic, Anxiety, and seizure attacks.

Moreover, Clonazepam is a controlled substance; it is not available over the counter, which means you cannot buy Clonazepam without a prescription.

Drinking Alcohol While On Klonopin

It is not advised to drink alcohol while on Klonopin. Klonopin and alcohol are depressants that directly affect the central nervous system (CNS). The doses of Klonopin used for Anxiety and seizures help relax and calm individuals to make them feel better.

Due to its calming effect, there is a risk of being addicted to Klonopin. If CNS depressants are combined with other calming agents, especially alcohol, it and lead to adverse side effects. Taking them both together enhances each other's intoxicating effects, and a person is highly likely to substance abuse.

Even in small doses, the combination of Klonopin and Alcohol can make an individual feel tired or sleepy, leading to a lack of coordination. It can lead to people having difficulty waking up, leading to coma in extreme cases.

Another risk of mixing Klonopin and Alcohol is depressed breathing. Breathing slowly or irregularly can lead to a person getting less oxygen in their body. In an emergency, if the person is left alone, it could lead to death.

Klonopin risks abuse or drug addiction, which results in severe effects. Do not consume the medicine for a more extended period, and do not take more than prescribed by the doctor.
The FDA recommends treating Anxiety, panic attacks, or seizure, not sleeping issues. It has the side effects of drowsiness and dizziness.

Physical coordination might get impaired due to mixing these two. Alcohol is already intoxicating and, if combined with Klonopin, can lead to these conditions:

  • Brain damage
  • Reduced liver function
  • Memory problems analyzed studies on the interactions between Klonopin and alcohol. It was a phase 4 clinical study analyzed from the FDA data.

According to, the drug interactions were reported using Klonopin and alcohol. Reports from 80 people were taken to analyze the data. Some common interactions include back pain among females and depression among males.

Some other conditions caused by mixing Klonopin and alcohol include:

  • Insomnia
  • Suicide attempt
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Confusion
  • Agitation
  • Cold sweat

They suggest the study as a second opinion to make health care decisions

Bottom Line From Practical Anxiety Solutions

Klonopin can be very useful to most Anxiety and seizure patients. It works on the neurotransmitters in the brain and helps to calm a person. Due to its calming effects, Klonopin, if taken with alcohol (another intoxicant), can increase the impact of getting intoxicated, which can be addictive and even life-threatening in severe cases. We do not advise you to take Klonopin while under alcohol.
