Muscle Relaxants for Anxiety Induced Pain
Table of Contents

If you have neck or back pain and are dealing with any other condition that causes muscle spasms, your healthcare professional might prescribe a muscle relaxant for you. Pain often induces anxiety, and benzodiazepines are a group of medications that can help reduce anxiety & can also be used as a muscle relaxant.

Muscle relaxers are the ideal medication to use for acute rather than chronic pain. They can provide relief from muscle spasms, arthritis, and back/injury-related chronic pain as they are ideally prescribed for acute rather than chronic pain.

Prescription Medications:

Muscle spasms are uncomfortable and painful, but medications like prescription drugs or over-the-counter medicines can help. Prescription medications are divided into two groups: antispasmodics and antispastics. Antispasmodics treat muscle spasms while antispastics work on treating muscular spasticity in the muscles.

Antispasmodics: Centrally Acting Skeletal Muscle Relaxants (SMRs)

According to Waldman H.J. (1994) centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxants and associated drugs. Journal of Pain and Symptom Management Centrally acting SMRs help relieve muscle spasms and are thought to work by causing a sedative effect or preventing pain signals from reaching the brain. It is best that they only be used for two to three weeks as research has not yet been done on their safety after prolonged use.

Antispastic medications are used to treat muscle spasticity. They should not be confused with other types of medication that can cause muscles to tighten up, such as seizures or injuries. These drugs include Baclofen, Dantrolene, diazepam (valium).

Warnings for prescription muscle relaxants:

Muscle relaxants are effective at relieving pain but can be habit-forming. Be sure to take your medication exactly as prescribed by your healthcare physicians. It can cause withdrawal symptoms, such as seizures or hallucinations. Do not suddenly stop taking your medication if you’ve been on it for a long time.
