Wellbutrin goes by the generic name, Bupropion. Wellbutrin Is not an SSRI
It is an antidepressant that includes tetracyclic agents that act by inhibiting both serotonin and norepinephrine in the body. Wellbutrin treats depression, narcolepsy, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and Parkinson’s disease.
It was approved on 30th December 1985 by the FDA.
Wellbutrin belongs to a class of drugs called Norepinephrine and Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitors (NDRIs). Wellbutrin works by blocking the action of both norepinephrine transporters and dopamine transporters, unlike SSRIs, which blocks serotonin transport in neurons. Though both NDRIs and SSRIs can treat depression, their mechanism is different.
Wellbutrin also blocks nicotine’s effect, making it useful in smoking cessation. Wellbutrin’s action is complex, and its neurological effects are not fully understood.
Focalin, Ritalin, and Wellbutrin are some NDRI medications approved in the US to treat ADHD and depression(Hasnain, M. and Pandurangi, A.K., 2008).
How To Take Wellbutrin?
