Tofranil is a brand-name drug for the oral tablet Imipramine. It is a tricyclic antidepressant that is used to treat depression. Imipramine treats depression by working on your central nervous system, where it increases certain levels of natural substances like norepinephrine in your brain. It is also used along with other treatments to prevent bed-wetting in children. There is not enough information on how Imipramine prevents bed-wetting; Some studies believe it works by preventing the impact of a certain substance called acetylcholine on the bladder. Imipramine can also be taken along with other medications as a part of combination therapy.(Gupta, V., 2021)

How to use Imipramine?

Imipramine is available as a tablet and a capsule for oral use. When used to treat depression, imipramine tablets or capsules are often taken one or more times per day, with or without meals.

When used to prevent bedwetting in children, imipramine tablets are normally taken one hour before sleep. Take Imipramine at the same time every day if possible.

Read all of the drug guides or instruction papers that came with your prescription and follow all of the instructions on the label. The doctor may need to adjust your dosage from time to time. Follow the medication’s instructions to the letter. If you’re having surgery, let your doctor know. If your symptoms worsen, contact your doctor.

This drug takes a while to take effect. If you’re taking this medicine for depression, it could take up to three weeks before you see the full effects. Even if you feel normal, keep taking this medication. Do not discontinue using this medication without first visiting your physician. When medicine is abruptly withdrawn, several conditions may worsen. It’s possible that your dose will need to be gradually reduced.

This medicine may not work as effectively in children who have been bed-wetting for a long time and may require different dosing. If this drug isn’t functioning as well as it used to, talk to your doctor.(Gupta, V., 2021)
